The make up of America has changed drastically throughout the years. Before immigration from the Europe began the population was made up entirely of Native American tribes and cultures. Then when immigration from Europe began the culture and ethnicity began to change and continued to change as more people from across the world began to immigrate to America. Now days America is a giant melting pot, or mixture of different cultures and ethnic groups, creating new unique cultures.
You may be wondering how it is that anyone knows what truly makes up America. That is where the government Census comes into play. The census is a mandated survey that all Americans are required to complete by law. This survey asks questions about who lives in the house, age of children, when one got married, income, and so much more. All this data is collected by the government and a special census group take that data and make it into graphs and statistics that are shared with the government and civilian population.
This data tells us what kind of people make up America today. It also helps the government find out what parts of the country need more funds, where the highest poverty areas are, and how many seats each state should have in the House of Representatives. Census data is extremely valuable throughout the different branches of the government.
